Do Solar Water Heaters Work When It Is Overcast?

As South Africans, we are concerned about our electricity supply. We have already had our fair share of load shedding this year (on top of a COVID-19 pandemic) and with more pressure on the grid in the form of air conditioners, who knows what will happen during the summer months.

One way to avoid the discomfort and frustration that goes along with load shedding is to find an alternative energy source such as solar power. Solar power offers significant benefits whichever way you use it – solar geysers or PV systems.

If you haven’t converted to solar yet, you probably have some questions like: “Do solar water heaters work on cloudy days?” And, you are right to be concerned because solar energy does require an investment on your part. But we are here to tell you that you will have plenty of hot water throughout the year.

A solar heating receiver/collector absorbs heat from the radiation of the sun and not from direct heat. A solar geyser will be able to function in temperatures well below 0° C as long as there is sunlight. While the performance would see a reduction in extreme conditions, you will always have hot water. It’s a good thing we live in sunny South Africa, where we have plenty of sunshine, even in winter.

As for overcast days – solar batteries are an excellent solution to store excess energy for use when the sky is grey. So include this in your installation to ensure a steady supply of hot water throughout the year.

There are many solar water heating systems available on the market. It makes choosing the right one for your needs a little challenging. But, Nupower is here to help with any questions you might have about switching from electricity to solar.
