Is Gas Hot Water Cheaper Than Solar?

By April 21, 2022No Comments

In a world economy that has seen a steep increase in Brent crude oil prices and slate levies, explained by the global impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine, it’s fair to ask the question; is gas hot water cheaper than solar?

Two or three years back it would have been relatively easy to lean towards gas for heating water as opposed to electricity, however, today is a completely different scenario.

Unfortunately, those of us living in South Africa are yet to feel the full impact of these price increases and the growing instability as the world fights over gas pipelines, making it even more difficult to answer questions like this when it comes to LP gas.

In a 2020 article in the Business Insider, they stated that in ‘April 2019 consumers in some parts of South Africa paid up to R27.87 per kilogram for LP gas, and by June prices had breached R28 per kilogram in some zones’.

However, times have really changed since then. In an online article from Cape Talk, dated February 2022, they reported that the LP gas retail price would increase by a maximum of 70 cents per kilogram. Very different picture!

Is gas hot water cheaper than solar?

As things stand now on the world stage, having any confidence in the cost of LP gas for heating water is virtually impossible. One simply can’t rely on all the elements that are involved in determining this price, however, the cost of solar hot water is something that can be relied on.

The sun will still continue shining, and in a country as blessed with over 2500 hours of sunshine per year on average, you can rely on a steady supply of solar hot water around the year in most parts of South Africa.

As load shedding continues unannounced and unexpectedly, electricity tariffs rise as well, leaving us with little in the way of hope that hot water will get any cheaper, whether with electricity or gas.

The certainty of solar power!

As solar technology advances, solar products, including solar water heating systems, become less and less expensive, and if you’ve chosen to invest in a solar water heater through NuPower Solar, you’re going to get competitive prices for SABS-quality products you can rely on.

Despite the upfront investment when it comes to solar water heating systems in South Africa, there can be no more stable investment in keeping the hot water flowing as opposed to the instability of LP gas prices and electricity tariffs.

The fact is, that depending on the NuPower Solar water heating system you invest in, even if it takes 4 years to pay for the system, you’ll be looking forward to a future in which you pay absolutely nothing for hot water.

The sun will continue to shine, no matter how many price wars are fought over gas and oil, or how many wars there are, which makes purchasing a solar water heating system the most certain of all three water heating systems available to us.
